Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort & Spa: My Experience

Ojo Caliente: A Hot Springs Escape

While touring New Mexico on a turquoise and Native American jewelry expedition for myself, I found Ojo Caliente one evening while looking for somewhere to slow down, relax, and simply enjoy the experience of being in New Mexico.

What I found was so much more than a place to spend the night.

Located about an hour outside Santa Fe, near Taos, Ojo Caliente sits on 77 acres in northern New Mexico’s high desert. The property is known for its naturally fed thermal mineral springs, spa experiences, hiking, yoga, and farm-to-table dining.

And for me, it became one of the most memorable stops of the entire trip.

A note on timing: My visit to Ojo Caliente was pre Covid so this post reflects my personal experience at the resort during that time. Some amenities, pricing, policies, and offerings may have changed since then. Please be sure to check their website for any updates.

    The Ojo Experience

One of the first things I did was something I had never experienced before: a mud bath.

I stepped out into the Santa Fe sun in my bathing suit and headed straight for the fountain. Earth was just pouring out, a runny mess, I placed my hands under the flow and began applying all over my body. I took a seat in a nearby lounge chair and started to bake.

As the mud dried, I remember feeling like it was somehow pulling all the negativity out of my body and replacing it with something calmer. Whether that was the mineral-rich mud, the sunshine, the quiet, or simply giving myself permission to stop thinking for a while, I don’t know.

    But I loved it.

After the mud bath, I transitioned into my spa experience. I decided to have a sugar scrub performed by one of the spa staff. They exfoliated my entire body and then washed the scrub away before moving directly into my theraputic massage.

    And that massage?

It sent me into another universe. 😂

    Resort Life at Ojo

Ojo offers a variety of ways to spend the day, whether you’re looking for an actual spa treatment or simply want to soak and disconnect.

During my visit, the combination of the mud bath, sugar scrub, massage, and mineral waters created something I hadn’t really expected when I arrived: complete mental quiet.

That’s probably the best way I can describe Ojo.

For a little while, my brain just… stopped.

Current offerings at the property include daily yoga, self-guided hikes, and even daily puppy playtime. There are also multiple options for overnight accommodations, with rates typically starting around $300 per night and increasing depending on the type and size of accommodation.

    My Favorite Moment: Private Pool

My absolute favorite experience at Ojo Caliente was renting a private heated pool.

I chose an evening reservation, and I’m so glad I did.

The pool is outdoors and open to the sky. One side is a natural canyon wall, so instead of looking at another building or resort property, you’re looking straight toward the canyon and the night sky.

And then there are the stars.

The other three sides are Adobe privacy walls separating your pool from the others. There’s also a traditional New Mexico fireplace, lounge chairs, and towels available for you to use.

I remember sitting there in the warm mineral water, looking up at the night sky, and feeling an incredible sense of calm.

Those moments under the stars, surrounded by warm water and the New Mexico landscape, are honestly some of the most peaceful moments I’ve ever experienced.

I have never felt like my brain was so completely turned off.

And sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.

    The Artesian Restaurant

Ojo Caliente also has an on-site restaurant, The Artesian, which is open to both resort guests and the public for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The restaurant focuses on farm-fresh, seasonally inspired cuisine featuring locally sourced ingredients. There are options for omnivores as well as gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian diners.

One of the details I found particularly interesting is the relationship between the restaurant and Ojo Farm. The resort’s food is grown just about 1,000 feet from the restaurant itself.

So the farm-to-table concept here isn’t just marketing language. The farm is quite literally right there.

    Was it Worth it?

    For me, absolutely.

My experience at Ojo Caliente was incredible from beginning to end. The property itself is beautiful, but what really stood out to me was the feeling of the place.

The service and care from the staff were exceptional, and the combination of the mineral springs, spa treatments, beautiful surroundings, and quiet moments made this one of the most memorable experiences of my New Mexico trip.

I went looking for somewhere to relax for an evening.

I left feeling like I’d found a place where I could actually turn my brain off for a while.

    My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5

If you’re traveling through northern New Mexico and looking for somewhere to slow down, soak in the mineral waters, and experience a different side of the state, Ojo Caliente is one place you’ll remember for a very long time.
