Getting from Newark to NYC: AirTrain Made it Easy

Traveling alone can sometimes feel intimidating, especially when you land in a new city and need to figure out public transportation. But don’t worry! If you’re flying into Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and heading to Manhattan, getting into the city is easier than you might think.

I found the process surprisingly simple, and I’m going to walk you through how to take the AirTrain and connect to NJ TRANSIT so you can make your way into New York City with confidence — without the stress of figuring it all out on your own.

Step 1: Arrival at EWR (Newark International Airport)

Once you arrive at Newark Liberty International Airport, exit your plane and follow the signs toward baggage claim if you have luggage to collect. From there, keep an eye out for the AirTrain signs overhead. You’ll see signage throughout the airport, complete with directional arrows that help guide you along the way.

Honestly, I found the airport surprisingly easy to navigate. The signs make it clear where to go and which direction to turn, so you don’t have to feel like you’re wandering around hoping you’re headed the right way!

Even better, EWR has staff members wearing red shirts stationed throughout the airport to help travelers who need directions or assistance finding the AirTrain. So, if you’re traveling alone or feeling a little overwhelmed after your flight, don’t hesitate to ask for help.

Step 2: Transition to NJ Transit

Getting from the airport terminals to the NJ Transit train station is usually a pretty straightforward process. In most cases, you can simply stay on the AirTrain until you reach the Newark Airport Train Station, where you’ll connect to NJ Transit for your trip into New York City.

However, during my visit in October 2026, there was construction taking place at the airport, so our journey looked a little different. We rode the AirTrain part of the way before airport staff directed us to a shuttle bus. The bus took us directly to the NJ Transit station by road.

Thankfully, airport staff were available to help guide passengers through the temporary changes, so we weren’t left guessing where to go.

From boarding the AirTrain to arriving at the NJ Transit station, the entire process took about 25 minutes. Even with the construction and the unexpected shuttle transfer, I found the experience relatively easy to navigate.

Step 3: New Jersey Transit to NYC

Once you exit the AirTrain—or, in my case, the shuttle bus—cross the walkway and head directly into the NJ Transit station. Inside, you’ll find ticket machines where you can purchase your train ticket to New York Penn Station in Manhattan.

During my trip in October 2026, the ticket cost approximately $17.50, and the train ride took about 30 minutes. From there, you’re right in the heart of Manhattan and ready to start exploring!

If you happen to visit on a beautiful day, the ride itself can be a nice part of the experience. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the views as the city skyline begins to come into view.

One of my favorite things about this route is that you don’t have to navigate a complicated series of transfers or figure out the New York subway system right away. Just follow the signs, purchase your ticket, board the train, and enjoy the ride.

    Step 4: Arriving to NYC

Once you have your ticket, follow the signs to the train platform and wait for your train to arrive. Once you’re on board, find a somewhat comfortable seat, sit back, and enjoy the ride. Read a book, watch the scenery roll by, or listen to your favorite podcast as you make your way into New York City.

And here’s the best part: you don’t have to worry about getting off at the wrong stop! New York Penn Station is the final stop on this NJ Transit route, so just stay on the train until you arrive.

Once you reach Penn Station, hop off, follow the signs toward the exit, and step out into Manhattan. Congratulations! You’ve made it from Newark Airport to New York City without having to navigate a taxi, rideshare, or complicated series of subway transfers.

Now, let the adventure begin! 🗽
